The Five Heartbeats of the Office

Happy Tuesday #Jontourage,

Welcome back to the “Classy Gent Chronicles”, where staying classy is the only way to be.  Let's jump right into it....

Everyone’s goal should be to become a top-ranking, award-winning, promotion-worthy employee.  I live by the expression that “every day you are being interviewed”.  The dynamics at the workplace are constantly changing and you never know when the opportunity to become promoted will become available.

Here are five reasons people stand out positively at work:
  1. Honest Hank- Hank stands out because you can trust always Hank.  As a boss, you know that Hank will always come through for you.  If he can’t come through this, you know that he will speak up.  Most positions deal with money or confidential information so you never have to worry about Hank taking money or misusing company secrets.  Since Hank is honest, he is most likely also loyal.  Hank will let you know upfront what is going on with him, whether it is an issue in his personal life or problems at the office.  Hank will come to first before he goes above your head even if it is an issue above the supervisor’s pay grade.  Most importantly, customers will develop a love for Hank because he represents the company well but does not mislead the customer just to make a sale.
  2. Creative Chris- Supervisors really love Chris because he thinks outside the box.  The best way to be ahead of the curve is to develop solutions to potential problems.  Who wants to spend unnecessary money and time because no one double checked to make sure all systems were go before a product was launched?  Chris is always thinking of ideas which are going to make the organization competitive.  While some employees stick to the status quo and strictly follow the job description, Chris is always thinking about how he can expand the company brand.  The real reason supervisors value Chris is because he may come with an idea that saves the company money.  The employee that figures how to keep money in the company’s pocket always wins.
  3. Professional Pete- Bosses love Pete because he never does or says anything that will ever make the company look bad.  Pete is always dress head to toe in his best and when he is outside handling business on behalf of the company, everyone is comfortable knowing Pete won’t embarrass the brand.  When everyone else is freaking out, Pete is always very calm.   In any company, issues come up where either customers will be upset or a client wants something from the company with late notice.  Bosses love the fact that Pete never panics.  He just wants to get the job done.  Pete also never crosses inappropriate boundaries at work never making any supervisor or employee uncomfortable.
  4. Helpful Henry- Henry is a joy to have in the office because he is willing to do what is asked of him without always needing credit.  Henry clearly sees there is a shortage at work and does not complain doing extra.  If there is an uneven amount of work, Henry does not mind taking one for the team.  He rarely complains about struggles at work to management because he knows you all have a lot on your plate and does not want to add any additional stress.  The team loves Henry because he probably has the closest bonds with everyone considering how much he is always helping.
  5. Focused Frank- Frank meets his objectives by any means necessary.  You do not have to tell Frank to come in early or stay late because he is already doing those things.  Frank has a great work ethic and rarely gets burnt out.  Granted Frank may not have much of a personal life because he is so career driven but he is perfectly fine with that.  Frank has dreams of getting promoted and he is working hard so that the promotion is sooner rather than later.

I do my best to be a combination of these five personalities.  I would say of these five personalities, I am mostly “Professional Pete”

Moral of the story:  Which one of these five are you?  What is your reputation at work like?  What steps are you taking now to step into a managerial role? Next week, we will discover five traits that will get you fired.

Remember, in order to live out your dreams, you have to think it, feel it, live it!  Until next time, stay classy...
