Happy Tuesday #Jontourage,
Welcome back to the “Classy Gent Chronicles”, where staying classy is the only way to be. On this special edition Women's History/ Women's Appreciation blog post, you are going to learn five life lessons I learned from my favorite celebrity, Mýa. Let's jump right into it.... So most people have a favorite singer. Maybe it’s based off of a similar personality. Maybe it’s that their music really speaks to your soul. For me, mine stems from a childhood connection. When I was younger, my mom used to work in the music business. Although there were nights she was out of town or long hours at the office, there were some pretty cool perks. One amazing perk were the autographed albums. Who doesn’t love a personalized CD? Secondly, a cool perk were the moments you got to brag to your friends and classmates about the cool job your mom has. Every kid wants to be accepted and a parent with a cool job is essentially your golden ticket to “Acceptanceville, USA”. I remember once my mom came to career day to talk about what she did and all the kids were in awe. I felt like a celebrity that day. All I was missing was the red carpet and the paparazzi. The third and probably coolest part of a mom in the music business were the concert tickets with backstage passes. Who wouldn’t want to meet a musician as a little kid? I mean really…

Happy Tuesday #Jontourage,
Welcome back to the “Classy Gent Chronicles”, where staying classy is the only way to be. Let's jump right into it.... A few weeks back, I paid for my first photo shoot. The first time I ever had a photo shoot, my best friend did the photos. Since I am about to drop my second book (I said that like I’m dropping an album), I felt it was time for new photos. I also got a little taller and my face looks different so it was definitely time for pictures. I decided to pay my friend Claire to do the photos. Claire is someone I have known for about nine years plus her and I have a great connection. We can talk for hours about our dreams because we are both ambitious people. She started her own marketing and visual arts company called “Vizeon”. Since one of my 2017 goals was to support more local businesses, I thought working with her was perfect. When it came to pricing, I truly wasn’t sure what to expect for the cost because I am not sure what the average rate is for a photo shoot. We met up on a Saturday in a location that is about 30 minutes from where she lives so I was appreciative of her driving. Before I got to the location, Claire had arrived and set up everything include the lighting and backdrop. When I got there, I was in amazement how many materials you needed for a good photo shoot. These items were things most people would need a team of three for to help set everything up. We spent about an hour and a half taking photos of me in different outfits while in different locations. After the photo shoot, we went got dinner and hung out with some other friends at her apartment. Overall, it was an amazing day and I ended up loving the photos. She sent them back in less than three days after editing them for hours. Happy Tuesday #Jontourage,
Welcome back to the “Classy Gent Chronicles”, where staying classy is the only way to be. Let's jump right into it.... The recent Oscar Award crowned many actors and actresses with awards for the roles they played. With every award show comes criticism of who left with awards. There is always the claim that “so and so” was robbed of an award. What makes it even trickier is when race comes into play with that accusation. For example, Denzel Washington was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars for his role in “Fences” but lost to Casey Affleck for his role in “Manchester at Sea”. I did not actually see “Manchester at Sea” but I did see “Fences” and I loved it. In previous years, many award shows (the Oscars especially) have been accused of being racially biased due to the low of number of minority winners. When it comes to the top tier award categories, the amount of minority representation becomes even less. Similarly with the Grammy’s, Adele won Album of the Year over Beyonce, which was met with a lot of criticism as well, even from Adele. As time has gone on, we have seen more minorities like Viola Davis receive spotlight for her talent on the big screen. However, with Denzel Washington not winning Best Actor, the claims of racism are still there. |
